Ernst Roehm was one of Hitler's best friends. They fought side by side in the streets in the early days of the Nazi party.
When Hitler became the most powerful man in Germany, he appointed Roehm head of the Brown Shirts - the Nazi storm troopers.

But in July 1934, Hitler gave the order to have his best friend killed. During the infamous 'Night of the Long Knives' he was shot dead in a small cell at Stadelheim Prison in Munich.
Roehm had become too powerful, and his brown shirted SA troops posed a threat to Hitler's personal bodyguard the SS. Also he was a homosexual and - to Hitler and his Nazis - a pervert. When Hitler was forced to choose between loyalty and power there would be no hesitation.


Using archive film this program explores the political in- fighting between the leaders of the Nazi party, at a time when they were trying to conquer Europe and eradicate the Jews.

Nothing - not even the oldest of friendships - would stand between Hitler and his all-consuming need for power.
